Program Note: John Burge's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, was commissioned by the Kingston Symphony Orchestra through funding provided by the Ontario Arts Council. The work was specifically written for trumpet virtuoso, Stuart Laughton, who has over the years performed a number of compositions written by John Burge. Stuart and the orchestra premiered the work on January 12, 2003 in Grant Hall, Kingston, Ontario.  This Concerto is organized in the traditional, three-movement design of contrasting fast-slow-fast movements. The first movement is somewhat monothematic in the way that it makes extensive use of the opening idea that is initially heard in the violins. The middle movement is written in a more reflective character with more contrapuntal passages. The final movement's lighter feeling is created by the unexpected shifts between triple and duple meter that are often undermined by misplaced accents and sudden changes of melodic direction and orchestration.

Note: The solo trumpet part is available for both B flat and C trumpets.
